Gateway troubleshooting

This article will guide you through what actions to take when you experience issues with a gateway not having signal

The gateway has a SIM card that allows it to connect to mobile networks, however, signal may vary depending on where the building site is. If it is located in an area with bad mobile signal, then it might be a good idea to have a backup connection, such as the ethernet cable.

If you notice that the gateway has poor or no connection (when the light on top turns red), then first of all check the following things:

- Is it placed in a basement or close to the ground?  Basements often have poor signal reception due to the surrounding earth and concrete.
- Is it surrounded by a lot of metal, glass, or aluminium? These materials can interfere with signal reception and reduce connectivity.

Have in mind, that typically, the range of the gateway in unobstructed line of sight is very far (several kilometers), but as soon as walls etc. are in-between, due to the nature of radio signals, then the range decreases significantly. Reinforced concrete walls and any type of metal will substantially influence the signal in a building, whereas timber walls would obstruct it much less. Therefore, a fair estimate for the range of the gateway would be between 20-50 meters inside a building.

If you suspect that the location of the gateway is the issue, then try to move it to a different place at the building site, preferably as high as possible.

If that doesn't help, then you can do a quick reset of the gateway:
  1. Turn off the power.
  2. Take out SD-card and insert again (you should hear a click).
  3. Take out SIM-card and insert again (you should hear a click).
  4. Turn on the power.
  5. Wait 30 seconds.
  6. Click and hold the reset button behind for 10 seconds (requires a pointy thing like a pen).
